King's Bridge: this bridge was erected in 1822 by James Gibson of Hillhead to connect the lands of Hillhead and Blythswood. The foundation stone was laid with Masonic honours when King George IV was in Edinburgh; the structure was named the King's Bridge in commemoration of this event.
Designed and built under the supervision of John Herbertson Jnr, Architect, this was the first metal bridge over the River Kelvin. It was built on the suspension bridge principle, but the chain-iron rods lay below the deck-beams and were connected by means of cast-iron brackets. It had a clear span across the river, but was only 12ft [3.66m] wide.
This bridge was replaced in 1895 by the present Eldon Street Bridge (NS56NE 2903).
D Boyce 1996.
This bridge formerly carried the predecessor road to Eldon Street across the River Kelvin near what is now the North gate to Kelvingrove Park (NS56NE 328). The river here forms the boundary between the parishes of Govan (to the W) and Glasgow (to the E).
