James Neilson of Kilmarnock was probably the architect of the pair of lodges that now form the main entrance to the Dumfries House Estate.

Photographic survey of pair of lodges and gates built by 6th Earl of Dumfries c.1803. The Earl built a further pair of lodges at Stockiehill closer to Cumnock and a further lodge on the north drive at Auchinleck.
