Archaeology Notes

NS46NW 4 c.406 692.

A Roman patera, datable to the 1st century AD (A S Robertson 1970) was found in the autumn of 1886, about 1 1/2 to 2ft from the surface, when digging part of a field a little N of the spot where the Barochan Cross was standing in 1890 (NS 4056 6902 - see NS46NW 1). It measured 9 1/2 ins in diameter at the mouth, 6 1/2 ins high, with the handle 8 1/8 ins long; the latter was stamped - OLIBI, the maker having been Publius Cipius Polibius. It was donated to the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS) in 1920 (Accession no: FT 90).

Two bronze handles were found at the same time, along with the patera. Their present location is not known.
