(NS 4188 6618) Craigends House (NR)

OS 6" map (1857)

(Site of) (NAT) Craigends House (NR)

OS 6" map (1915)

Though no traces remained in 1889 (A H Millar 1889) in 1857, Craigends House was described as an excellent mansion, over 300 years old. Its very strong walls were perfectly preserved at that time (Name Book 1857). According to Orig Paroch Scot (1851) part of it dated to 1477. It belonged to a cadet branch of the Cuninghames of Glencairn.

W Macfarlane 1907; New Statistical Account (NSA) 1845

There are no visible signs of the site of this house. The area is now part of a garden belonging to the present estate, owned by Miss Cunningham.

Visited by OS (WMJ) 10 March 1951

Old Craigends House is first illustrated on Ainslie's map of 1796. Along with several outbuildings to the SW, it is depicted, roofed, on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Renfrewshire 1857, sheet vii). Other outbuildings are either shown roofless or annotated 'Ruin'.

The ice-house (NS46NW 10.03) and the freestone quarry (NS46NW 10.5) are depicted at this time along with a walled garden and a mound lying to the SW of the house. By the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Renfrewshire 1897, sheet vii) the house had been demolished and replaced by a new mansion (NS46NW 10.00) to the SE.
