Archaeology Notes

NS36SE 85 3806 6002

For Castle Semple (house) and associated buildings, see NS36SE 9.00.

(NS 382 601) As part of a survey of 18th-century drainage improvements to Black Cart Water, adjacent estate features were surveyed.

NS 3806 6002 Site of 'Stock Bridge' crossing narrows at end of Castle Semple Loch and start of Black Cart Water, demolished shortly after 1730. On S bank of river at NS 3881 6019, ruined rubble masonry abutment of Elliston Bridge, demolished c 1790, replaced by Garthland Bridge. Elliston Bridge formed main route from Ayrshire to Kilbarchan and was flanked by hamlets on either side of river. On S side of river, rectangular enclosure of Bridgend steading still evident. On N side of river, former terrace of dwellings defined by low area of raised ground.

Fuller details have been lodged with the NMRS.
