Archaeology Notes

NS33SE 29 c. 363 345

(cf. NS33SE 15)

The Chapel of St Ninian, mentioned in 1511, was situated near Dundonald Castle (NS33SE 2 at NS 3636 3451). It was termed the Chapel Royal of Dundonald.

H Scott 1950

No reliable trace has been found of this chapel. According to references in various sources, it was situated "in or near the castle". McJannet (1938) states "no doubt the chapel was in the royal residence". Certain architectural features suggest that mass was celebrated in the room above the banqueting hall, at the NW corner of the castle. If it stood outside the building, it may have stood on the SW slope, where there is a mound, which Gillespie suggests may cover the remains of the chapel. The earliest recorded chaplain occurs about 1458, the latest, 1571.

J H Gillespie 1939

No further information; no significant features are visible on the SW slopes of Castle Hill.
