(NS 32073903) Roman Coins found here (NAT)

OS 25" map (1856)

A quantity of Roman coins was found some years ago when making improvements to this house, now occupied by Mr Caldwell, grocer (D Grey, town clerk). Mr Dick (Burgh treasurer) had many of them in his possession, but at present they have all disappeared; some of them were exhibited in Dumfries and Glasgow. Provost Campbell, who was present when the coins were found, still has one of the coins in his possession. (Presumably for reasons of space, this name appears without a siting symbol, in the centre of Irvine High Street, opposite No.160; the house on the west side of the road - presumably No.159 - has been demolished).

Name Book 1856

None of these coins are known to be held at Kilmarnock Museum, and no further information was obtained (C Woodward, Dick Institute, Kilmarnock).

Visited by OS (JRL), 25 May 1982.
