Archaeology Notes

NS33NE 7 379 385.

A "square mount or mote" was seen by Pococke at Thornton halfway between Kilwinning and Kilmarnock.

R Pococke 1887

No trace of a mound was seen in the vicinity of Thornton (NS 379 385). It is possible that Pococke is referring to the probable motte described on NS33NE 5, about 1 km SE of Thorntoun.
