(NS 3369 2210) Malt Cross (NR) (Site of)

OS 25" map (1961)

The Malt Cross was built in 1662 on the site of an earlier cross. It was modelled on the market cross of Edinburgh.

Though it is said to have been demolished in 1778, for the opening of the New Bridge, it is marked on Law's plan of 1824. It was probably removed about then, along with the Over Tolbooth (NS32SW 13). One side of it still exists, in the Carnegie Library, Ayr (A I Dunlop 1953).

(Ayr was created a Royal Burgh in 1205; presumably its earliest cross would date from this time) (c/f NS32SW 24).

W Dodd 1972; J Stillie 1864; J Paterson 1847

This site is marked by a stone cross in the road and a plaque in the wall opposite which states: "Here in mid-street stood the Malt Cross-Mercat Cross of Ayr. Removed 1778".

Visited by OS (JLD) 28 December 1955

The site and plaque are as described by the previous authorities.
