For standing stone at NS 3227 1869, see NS31NW 8.
There is a standing stone of dolerite in a field called the "Stone Park", not far from the mouth of the River Doon. It is 6ft 8ins high and measures 5ft 10ins by 3ft at the base.
J Smith 1895
Centred NS 3258 1935. Stone Park was the name of the field between Gearholm and Doonfoot Bridge. The stone was removed some twenty years ago (Mr Cunningham, septuagenarian, Craigweil, Greenfield Avenue, Ayr). There is no trace of a standing stone in this level field. (The measurements of NS31NW 8 are comparable with those given by Smith). Visited by OS (JD) 16 December 1955
No further information. The area is now partly built up.
Visited by OS (JRL) 2 October 1980
The Smith reference which is in Maybole district almost certainly refers to NS31NW 8.
Information from OS Recorder.
About 1935 a stone was removed from a field called the Stone Park between Gearholm and Doonfoot Bridge (OS Field Report); the area is now occupied by a housing estate. It is not known whether it was a prehistoric standing stone. Previously this stone has been confused with a standing stone noted by Smith in another field called the Stone Park, in the parish of Maybole, which is almost certainly the stone at NS 3227 1868 (see NS31NW 8).
RCAHMS 1985, visited (SH) July 1985.
