Archaeology Notes

NS31NW 26 c. 311 193

Roger de Scalbroc (late 12th century) gave a salt-works at Greenan to the monks of Melrose Abbey. The salt pans were situated next to Greenan Castle (NS 311 193) (A I Dunlop 1953).

J A Wade 1861; Munimenta de Melros No.66

Nothing significant was noted along the coastal strip near Greenan Castle. The most likely area for salt-working would seem to be the small, shallow bay on the W side of the Castle.

Visited by OS (JRL) 2 October 1980

The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative. The indeterminate remains that are noted under NS31NW 146 may be connected with these saltworks.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 28 June 2006.
