Archaeology Notes

NS24SW 4.01 2324 4227.

(NS 2324 4227) The remains of a slight rampart on the hillock occupied by Ardrossan Castle (NS24SW 4.00) mark the site out as being similar to other small homesteads along the coast nearby (e.g. NS24SW 2).

D H Caldwell 1974

It is presumed that the term 'hillock' refers to the steep-sided promontory on which the castle stands; this is the most defensible point on the broad plateau of Castle Hill and perambulation elsewhere showed no trace of an earthwork. Of the slight and amorphous undulations in the close vicinity of the castle buildings, none can be recognised as forming an earlier or contemporary defence.

Visited by OS (JRL) 13 October 1982.
