Archaeology Notes

NR97SE 24.04 centred 9577 7096

The structures situated between the Craignafeoch Burn and the lade (NR97SE 24.09).

This group of remains includes a charge house, powder mills, watch house/oil house and remains of the tramway.

The substantial rubble remains of powder mills (NR 95737 70978) are situated immediately E of the works lade. A waterwheel pit, with a later brick structure set within are also visible. At centred NR 5579 7097 is an area of very ruinous rubble with brick and concrete remains representing two powder mills. Another waterwheel pit was noted in this group. Heavily disturbed ground and humps with protruding bricks and bolts are that remains of the oil and watch houses (c.NR 9576 7097) depicted on the 2nd edition (but not 1st edition) of the 25-inch map (Argyllshire). Also depicted on the 25-inch scale map is a rooofed building at NR 9577 7096, which is not shown on the mid 19th century plan. The purpose of this structure remains to be discovered.

This group of factory buildings was connected to the rest of the complex by a tramway (2nd edition only), the embankment of which can be found on the E side of the site (NR97SE 24.06).
