(NR 8544 6849) Burial Ground (NR)

OS 6" map (1900)

This portion of ground was formerly used as a place of burial. No interments have taken place for a very considerable time, but the outline can still be faintly traced.

Name Book 1867

The probable site is pointed out on an oval terrace below a low cliff, embarked and now bounded by a thuja hedge. Has been used as a garden. No carved stones are known to have survived.

M Campbell and M Sandeman 1964

Local tradition holds that the present burial ground at Tarbet supersedes an earlier one at Glenakill, from which tombstones were removed about the beginning of the 18th century (D Mitchell 1886).

RCAHMS 1971

NR 8537 6850 There is no trace of a burial ground at the OS published site where there is a levelled terrace 26m NE-SW by 14m. Campbell is referring to a featureless gentle slope at NR 8536 6863.

Visited by OS (IA) 5 July 1973
