When Tarbert Castle (NR86NE 1) was enlarged and strengthened, early in the 14th century, a royal burgh was established nearby, perhaps on the flat-topped knoll immediately SW of the inner bailey of the castle. Little is known of the history of the burgh, but there is evidence to suggest it was still in existence in the mid-16th century. The buildings of Tarbert now date only from the early 19th century.
