(NR 7071 6693) Fort (NR)
OS 6" map, (1924)
A levelled platform at edge of 50' raised beach. Top enclosure oval, 58' x 33' entrance probably SE leading to lower terrace. The fort was probably called "Caisteal na Ceann, as a nearby cottage is "Castle Con" (Campbell and Sandemand 1964). However, the ONB (1868) quoting an estate plan of 1782 gies a name of "Dun na Clagnich" for this feature. It adds "A little S of the fort is to be seen the foundation of a building. From its position, it is doubtless associated with it".
M Campbell and M Sandeman 1964; Name Book 1868; Proc Soc Antiq Scot 1955; J M Coles 1966.
Although this is a suitable site for a dun there are no remains of any stone rubble or walling.
Site surveyed at 1/2500.
Visited by OS (I A) 26 June 1973.
The dun annotated 'Fort' and the building are depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Argyllshire 1873, sheet cc), but they are not shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1990).
