Archaeology Notes

NR57SE 7 5654 7346.

NR 565 734. On the N bank of [the] Abhainn a' Garbh-achaidh, where the burn is crossed by a track, are two stone hut circles and another one possible, each about 10m diameter, surrounded by a possible enclosure wall. A field system, including clearance cairns and stone rickles, lies about 50m NW of the track.

E J Peltenburg 1978; Information contained in letter from E J Peltenburg to OS, 10 April 1978.

Centred at NR 5654 7346 are two contiguous hut circles set into a gentle SE-facing slope. Both are 7.5m in diameter within low stone walls spread to 2.0m. They are entered from the SE. A portal stone and facing stone are evident on the NE side of the entrance of the NE hut. An amorphous area of stone immediately to the SW of the huts may be the "possible hut" mentioned by Peltenburg, but this is too vague for certain classification. The enclosure wall can be vaguely seen. A small number of probably contemporary clearance heaps lie to the north and south; the other stony heaps in the vicinity are more likely to be contemporary with later cultivation of the area.

Surveyed at 1/10,000.

Visited by OS (J B) 12 May 1978.

Activities

Field Visit (April 1979)

NR 565 734. This pair of hut-circles is situated on the N bank of the Abhainn a' Gharbh-achaidh and immediately SE of the road from Knockrome to Ardmenish.

Both hut-circles are roughly circular, measuring about 6.5m (A) and 7m (B) in diameter respectively within what are now stony banks up to 3.5m thick and 0.35m high; a few inner and outer facing-stones are visible. The entrance to hut-circle A is on the SSE and that to B on the SE. The interiors are levelled into the slope, which falls gently from NW to SE. To the SSE of B there is a jumble of stones, perhaps representing the remains of a third hut-circle. There is no trace of a wall enclosing the hut-circles (Pellenburg 1978) and to the N there is an area of rig-and-furrow cultivation with associated stone clearance-cairns.

RCAHMS 1984, visited April 1979.

Measured Survey (1980)

RCAHMS surveyed the hut-circle at Ardmenish at a scale of 1:200. The plan was redrawn in ink and published at a reduced scale (RCAHMS 1984, fig. 127A).
