Archaeology Notes

NR34NW 15 3004 4726

NR 300 472 The ruins of Tockmal are bounded on the south by a burn. Nearest the burn are some lines of walling, and immediately north are the ruins of 3 buildings. The north wall of the middle block is built over a large boulder which projects about 3ft.

In this boulder is a cone shaped depression about 6ins diameter at the mouth and 3ins deep, probably a mortar.

W D Lamont 1962; R W B Morris 1969.

NR 3004 4726 The circular depression, dimensions as stated, is in the smooth upper surface of an earthfast boulder measuring 2m by 1m. It is neatly ground and smooth and seems too small for any functional domestic use, although it is probably associated with the post Medieval buildings.

See also NR34NW 26.

Visited by OS (JRL) 10 June 1978.
