Archaeology Notes

NO89SE 9 88 94.

Sod Kirk, or Red Kirk, alleged to have been at Portlethen (NO99NW) was situated on the estate of Newhall (NO 883 942). It existed from about 1760 to 1816, when, being ruinous, it was superseded by a larger building at Cookney, Its name was due, probably, to its sod-built walls or sod roof, though latterly the roof was tiled.

J C Watt 1914; New Statistical Account (NSA) 1845.

The site of the alleged 'Red' or 'Sod Kirk' was not found during field investigation.

Visited by OS (W D J) 9 November 1961.
