Archaeology Notes

NO88SE 6 865 849.

(Area NO 865 849) The sites of St Ninian's Chapel and the old village of Kirkside of Dunnottar are now occupied by the fruit gardens of Dunnottar House.

St Ninian's Well (? the Minsister's Well - NO 8627 8503) lies beside the stream in the glebe to the south of the manse. Pins were dropped into the well on May Day.

F C Eeles 1897.

St Ninian's Den was the name of the den opposite Dunnottar House where Lady Kennedy's Bath (NO 8633 8457) was subsequently constructed.

J C Watt 1914.

Eeles (1897) is the only authority discovered who sites St. Ninian's Chapel anywhere other than on or near the site of Dunnottar Castle (see NO88SE 19).

Similarly, St Ninian's Den is sited by the OS, Simpson and Jervise just to the west of Dunnottar Castle, and St Ninian's Well has been located at NO 8799 8390 (see NO88SE 16).
