(Area: NO 596 659) Battle fought in this locality between Angus, Earl of Moray and King David I, AD 1130 (NAT).

OS 6" map, (1927).

David I defeated Angus, Earl of Moray in a battle at Stracathro in 1130 (Annals of Ulster 12th century; Aildred 12th century), but the exact site is not known.

The published site 'is most likely on, or near, the spot where the battle commenced. It extended as far east as Ballownie (NO 610 650) where the Earl of Moray is said to have been killed.' (Name Book c 1860) Relics of the battle are said to have been found.

G Chalmers (1807) 1887-92.

No further information.
