Archaeology Notes

NO53NE 59.03 centred 59133 37197

A group of hangars at the SW side of the airfield consisted of five 'Mainhill' or 'S' type Naval aircraft sheds four of which are set within earth blast banks. They are all visible on vertical air photographs (CPE/Scot/UK 218, 3205-3207, flown 25 June 1947).

At least four of the hangars survive in use by the farmer and are visible on more recent vertical air photography (All Scotland Survey [Jasair], 51788 207-208, flown 18 and 24 June 1988). The buildings are at NO 59048 37112, NO 59133 37197, NO 58930 37342 and NO 58992 37182. The hangar at c. NO 5911 3734 has been removed.

In addition, at least 23 huts or buildings can be seen on the 1947 air photographs, of which only two or three would appear to survive.
