Archaeology Notes

NO49NE 7.09 4839 9862 and 4840 9862

(NO 4839 9862). This flattened cairn is situated at the N side of a wooden farm building; it measures 6m across by 0.3m high and is probably a field clearance feature.

(NO 4840 9864). This cairn is situated at the foot of a river-terrace and is similar to other spreads of stony debris along the terrace-edge; it may derive from erosion, quarrying or railway construction.

The 'depressed track' that is mentioned by Ogston can be traced as a faint depression between the farm building and the river terrace. Neither the track nor the more easterly cairn is likely to be of archaeological significance.

Information from J O'Sullivan and J Hamilton, AOC (Scotland Ltd), February 1996, (NMRS, MS/729/8, no. 9).
