Field Visit (14 July 2011)
This cast-iron guide plate is situated on the N side of the junction of the A914 St Andrews to Newport on Tay public road and the minor road (B945) that runs N from it to Tayport. It measures 0.79m in breadth by 0.74m in height at the centre front and 0.85m at the rear. The hollow rear of the plate has been supported by a wall of mortared granite setts, which has partly collapsed. The front of the plate, at the foot of which is a small area of laid setts, comprises two angled panels, each painted white with black borders and the information contained within highlighted in black. Both panels list a series of places in order from St Michaels and indicates whether they are situated to the right (R) or left (L) of the respective road. No such indication is given if the location lies on the road.
The left panel indicates the direction to Strathburn (Left), Bogton (L), Newton (L), Kilmany (L), St Fort (L), Flass (L), Fordellhill (L), Pickletillem, Commerton (L), The Friartons and Newport.
The right panel indicates the direction to Craigie (Right), Rhynd (R), Kinshaldy (R), Cowbakie (R), Ninewells (R), Morton (R), Shanwell (R), Kirktonbarns (L), Burnside (L), Scotscraig (L) and Ferry-port on Craig.
