A type 27 (anti-aircraft defence) pillbox is visible on RAF wartime vertical air photographs (NLA 48, 5.3, flown 25 September 1942), at what was the SE perimeter taxiway off the main runway. The pillbox was removed during the 1942-3 runway extensions and is not depicted on the OS 1:10000 scale map, (1982).
