Archbishop Sharp was murdered on Magus Muir, near St Andrews on 2nd May 1679, by a party of fourteen men led by Balfour of Kinloch and Hackston of Rathillet.
A Lang 1909
In the midst of a clump of trees (immediately west of Claremont Farm) is a tombstone in memory of Andrew Gullin, weaver in Balmerino, one of the two executed for the murder of Archbishop Sharp. It bears the inscription "...Andrew Gullin, who suffered at the gallows tree of Edinburgh, July 1683..." etc.

The monument marking the place of Archbishop Sharp's murder was erected by J Whyte-Melville in 1877 and he also renewed Gullin's tombstone.

Archbishop Sharp was one of the chief persecutors of the Covenanters. His oppressions and cruelties were so great that in 1679 he was murdered by a band of Covenanters under Hackston of Rathillet, on Magus Muir, near St Andrews.

A modern pyramidical monument bears a latin inscription stating that this is the site where Archbishop Sharp was murdered in 1679. Gullin's tombstone near Claremont Farm, is a plain erect slab bearing the inscription as stated by Ordnance Survey Name Book (ONB).
