The King's Cross (see NO33SE 14 - cross base) at one time rested on top of the larger of two tumuli, where it had probably been placed when the smaller tumulus was opened in 1787 (Macintosh 1939).
In 1842, a human skeleton was found 1 1/2' below the surface, within 6 - 8 yards of the King's Cross. There were no traces of a cist. However, near the end of the 18th century eight or ten cists were found, all containing bones, near the same place.
NSA (written by G Addison - 1842) 1845; A Jervise 1859; M Macintosh 1939.
In a small plantation at this spot, are the remains of a badly mutilated mound, extending c. 30.0m N-S and 1.7m high. It cannot be ascertained if this is the remains of one of the tumuli referred to by Macintosh, or a natural mound on which a tumulus stood. Modern road improvements have destroyed much of the area.
Visited by OS (J L D) 17 April 1958.
