In a clearing to the E of the walled garden at Arthurstone (NO24SE 69.03) there is a lectern dovecot (6.4m from SW to NE by 4.4m transversely overall). It is of a random rubble build with a slated pent-roof (probably originally thatched), a cavetto eaves-course, crow-stepped gables, and a high coped-wall at the rear. A chamfered rat-ledge extends the length of the main facade and is broken-back and stepped-up on the gable-walls; bird-entry is permitted by a horizontal panel set above the rat-ledge. Opposed doorways (1.3m high) are placed central to the gable-walls; the interior has been gutted (though probably originally of two compartments) and adapted for use as a shed; an aumbry-chase is incorporated into the front and rear walls, but there are no bird boxes.
Incorporated in re-use in the masonry of the dovecot there are a number of dressed and moulded stones which have probably come from Coupar Angus Abbey (NO23NW 13); these include the fragment of a fluted cap from an engaged shaft (above the rat-ledge in the NE wall). The S skewput, which is cut with a roll and crowning fillet, bears the date 1610. At the E angle two skews are juxtaposed; the upper is a cavetto and bears a blank shield, the lower has a broad quarter-round and crown ing fillet. The dovecot, which stood originally at the W end of the United Presbyterian church in Precinct Street, Coupar Angus (NO 2223 3982), was rebuilt at Arthurstone in 1883.
