NO 2434 1849 The hoop of a small penannular brooch of 1st to 4th-century AD date was found in exposed soil by the entrance to Lindores Abbey. It was declared Treasure Trove (TT 51/95) and allocated to East Fife Museums Service.
National Museums of Scotland 1996.
(Location cited as NO 2434 1849). The hoop of a bronze pennanular brooch was found by chance by Mr K McKenzie-Smith in exposed soil at the entrance to Lindores Abbey (NO21NW 5.00). It was acquired by East Fife Museums Service under the provisions of the treasure trove legislation.
The hoop measures 28.5mm by 26mm in external diameter, 2.5mm in thickness, and 3mm in diameter at the terminals. The alloy has been identified as gunmetal and the brooch has been attributed to Fowler's type A3(i) with knob-and-collar terminals.
The slightly irregular knobs are squared-off at the aperture and the pin is lost. Severe corrosion has stripped the original surface but there is no sign of milling on the terminals. Circumferential corrosion lines follow stress-lines formed in hammering the object to shape.
F Hunter 1996.
This brooch is in course of accession prior to display in the Laing Museum, Newburgh.
