Description

This is the upper part of a small cross-slab carved in deep relief on all five surviving faces. Each face is bordered by a plain flatband moulding. Face A bears a cross of which the side-arms and upper arm extend to the border moulding. The cross itself is outlined by a roll moulding and has widely curving armpits, and there are traces of a carved motif at the centre of the cross-head. The arms are linked by a four-strand ring. Face B is carved with a panel outlined by a roll moulding which contains key pattern. Only the top right corner of face C survives, carved with a panel of double-strand interlace within a roll moulding. Face D also has a panel of key pattern but without the roll moulded edging. The upper narrow face E has a panel of two interlaced double-stranded cords.

Date: ninth or tenth century.

Archaeology Notes

NO21NW 37 2206 1743

NO 2206 1743. In the garden of Easter Clunie (NO21NW 107) are two fragments of stone cross slabs, alleged to be part of MacDuff's Cross (NO21NW 9). One bears a cross with round hollow angles and four concentric rings, the other an interlaced design. Both probably date from the 8th-10th centuries.

Visited by OS (J P) 15 September 1970.

One of the two carved stone fragments in the garden at Easter Clunie is part of an Early Christian cross-slab decorated with panels of interlace on its back and top and key-pattern along its sides. The other fragment is of relatively recent date and its purpose is not clear.

Also within the garden are two upper stones of rotary querns, the provenances of which are unknown; one has a neatly drilled handle socket.

In addition, there is part of a sundial, which came from a property in Abernethy that belonged to a relative of Mr Baird, the current owner of Easter Clunie farm.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS), 11 December 1996.
