Archaeology Notes

NO13SW 55 c140 322

A 'Druid Temple' once stood on Craigmakerran; only two huge boulders now remain, the rest having been broken up for building purposes.

A Scott 1911

There is no evidence that a stone circle ever stood at Craigmakerran House, as previously recorded by the Ordnance Survey. It is probable that Scott's identification of a stone circle on Craigmakerran Hill is actually referring to the pair of standing stones at Loanhead (NO13SW 12). He describes the site as having been a 'Druid temple' of which only 'two huge boulders' survive, an apt description of the stone pair at Loanhead, and it is significant that Scott does not otherwise refer to the Loanhead site.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS) 5 April 1989.

A Scott 1911.
