Archaeology Notes

NO12SW 63.01

NO 1135 2282 In May 2001 a watching brief was carried out on the foundation work for a flatted development. The site was considered to be archaeologically sensitive because of its location within the lands of the medieval hospital of St Leonard's (NMRS NO12SW 63). The watching brief revealed that on the SE part of the site a considerable depth of make-up, which was not bottomed in the SE corner, had been dumped in modern times to level out the natural ground slope. On the NW part of the site natural clay was observed below a disturbed former ground surface or subsoil, from which several post-medieval pottery sherds were recovered. The sherds could indicate horticultural activity contemporary with St Leonard's Hospital. No features or deposits of archaeological significance were observed.
