South Mains [NAT]

OS 1:10,000 map, undated.

The roofless buildings of South Mains farmstead, which comprise a two-storey farmhouse and a long range of outbuildings, lie within a plantation. The farmhouse lies to the E of the range and measures 13m from E to W by 5.8m transversely over walls 0.65m thick, and the E gable stands 5.4m high. It is of rubble and mortar construction with ashlar openings which are checked for harling. A single-storey stone-built extension adjoins the N wall and could be entered internally from the main house. There is evidence in the E gable for a fireplace at first-floor level.

The long range of the steading comprises four self-contained compartments; it measures 36.7m from N to S by 6.2m overall, with gables still standing up to 4m high. The walls are 0.6m thick and are of rubble and mortar construction with pinnings. The N end was formerly a byre and has several slit windows, two of which have been blocked. A first-floor door in the partition wall led into a loft above the byre. A horsegang adjoining the W wall at this end has now been reduced to its stone footings, and there is also an outshot and small enclosure adjoining the NE corner. The farmstead is shown roofed on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Perthshire, sheet cvii, 1866).
