Archaeology Notes

NN74SW 7 7276 4258.

A fort (dun) is shown at Callelochan (NN 72 42) immediately above the Keeper's house and to the W of the burn called Allt an Duin, the "Burn of the Fort". (It is not visible on available air photographs - RAF 1949 - but from the description the site is at about NN 725 426).

W A Gillies 1938

Nothing is published on the Breadalbane Estate Plan 1769 (in Register House, Edinburgh) and it is probable that Gillies is referring to an atlas of farm plans (Atlas of Farms on S Side of Loch Tay 1769, in Register House, Edinburgh) which shows a feature named "Tom'chafle" at NN 7276 4258 on the E side of Allt an Duin.

The site now lies in an area of afforestation on the edge of a promontory which has previously been cleared and cultivated. All that remains is an amorphous tumble of stones in which there are several large squared blocks indicative of grounders. The position and remains suggest that this was a homestead (c/f NN44SE 7).

Visited by OS (RD) 9 November 1970

The mass of rubble stones with occasional larger blocks at NN 7276 4258 (referred to above) is too indeterminate to enable classification as a homestead; it may simply be stone clearance dumped on to a knoll within ground formerly cultivated, now afforested. Perambulation on both sides of Allt an Duin failed to locate the site, and the Forestry Commission could give no further information.

No change to previous field report.
