Commando Memorial, Scott Sutherland, 1951 Bronze trio of rugged Commandos rising above a windy plateau on a granite plinth, their grim faces set resolutely towards the wartime training grounds of Ben Nevis and Lochaber's central massif. Still visible between Spean Bridge and Fort Augustus are scars of the short-lived Invergarry and Fort Augustus Railway, a 24 -mile spur off the West Highland Line (now dismantled). Constructed between 1897 and 1903, this privately-funded enterprise was a foolhardy and extravagent one, with considerable engineering works, including the creation of viaducts and a tiny tunnel by Loch Oich; by 1911 it had been forced to close.
