Lifeboat Station [NAT]
OS (GIS) AIB, April 2006.
Peterhead, Harbour, Lifeboat Station (NK c. 126 455). This sheet-metal timber-lined structure is said to have been built in the 1920s. There are proposals to re-site as a museum.
Information from Dr Robin Evetts, Historic Scotland, February 1997; visited by RCAHMS photographer (JM), 26 February 1997.
The first lifeboat house at Peterhead was built in 1865, in Greenhill Road, on the E side of the N Harbour. It was rebuilt and enlarged in 1900-1, but ceased use in 1908, and has since been demolished. The lifeboat was kept afloat until 1911, when a new lifeboat house and slipway were built on a site to the W of the S Harbour. From 1912, this housed the second lifeboat, which became No. 2, that moored in the harbour being No. 1.
The No. 1 boat was withdrawn in 1928, when the No. 1 station was closed. The lifeboat house was altered and extended in 1938, 1964, 1969, 1978 and 1980-1; it was used until 1998. In that year, the lifeboat was moored in a berth to the W of the N Harbour, temporary shore facilities being provided.
