On the spreading estuary of the Ythan, Newburgh was a significant port for fish and Ellon-bound cargo; also resort of retired seamen.

Archaeology Notes

NJ92NE 25 999 252

For general note on harbour facilities at Newburgh, see under Newburgh, Inches, Quay (NK02NW 20).

Newburgh is first mentioned in a charter (by Alexander Comyn, earl of Buchan) of 1261, as a place name, not a definition of status. In 1424 and 1425, there is undoubted evidence of a burgh which may be presumed to date from the time of earl Alexander. It was de novo erected burgh of barony in 1508/9.

G S Pryde 1965.
