Publication Account (1997)
The Uppcrkirkgate port or Schoolhill Port stood on Schoolhill, just within the mill burn (see pp 11-13 for further information on the town's ports). It was probably in existence by the fifiecnth century. By the time of its demolition in 1794, a gallery or room had been constructed above it, which was perhaps erected as early as 1585. The port and gallery were purchased by the town council in 1793 for £ 140, and demolished a year later. To date there is no archaeological evidence of this structure.
