In the 19th Century, the Inner Marches between Hardgate and Spital were defined at intervals by wall marks 'CR'. Two survive, one in Alford Lane forming a quoin on the rear gable of Holburn Central Church (NJ90NW 812) some 10m from Holburn Street; the other is noted on NJ90NW 161.

D B Gunn (ed.) 1929; F Wyness 1966.

This 19th-century boundary marker comprises a small dressed block, which has been set into a wall 1.3m above street level at the SW corner of Holburn Central Parish Church; the block bears the incised letters 'CR', which stand for 'City Royalty'.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS, ATW), 26 February 1997.
