Archaeology Notes

NJ83SE 16 c. 868 347.

An Late Bronze Age hoard found in a peat moss near Haddo House (NJ83SE 42.00), Methlick in 1858, consisted of a leaf-shaped sword, 25" long, and three other swords, now lost. The first named sword which is now in the Marischal College Museum, Aberdeen (Accession no: 253.2), bears an inscription to the effect that it was presented to Alexander Thomson of Banchory by the Earl of Aberdeen in 1858. (c/f NJ83SE 15).

(Ewart Park type - Caledonian step 1). Complete sword, L. 65.35 cm, Term.w. 4.70cm, Sh.w. 5.85cm, M.b.w. 4.90cm; dark brown patina; some patches of bronze corrosion, otherwise very good condition; very heavy blade and heavy thick handle; rivets 2:2, none in situ.
