Monument [NAT]

OS 1:10,000 map, 1990.

Air photograph: AAS/97/10/CT.

NMRS, MS/712/29.

This monument is situated on the NE shoulder of an un-named hill 510m S of Pitmedden House (NJ81SE 52.00). But for the woodland immediately to the N, it would command excellent views in all directions except the SW. The monument comprises a raised platform of harled random rubble, measuring about 3.6m in diameter at the base and 3.5m in height. An external flight of steps with an iron hand-rail leads up from the bottom of the E side, and the railing extends round the lip of the platform at the top. The stump of a flag-pole surrounded by the remains of a circular iron bench can be seen at the centre. A cartouche set into the side of the platform contains a representation of a sailing ship and the latin motto 'Per Perigulum Vivo' and the legend 'Erected on the 50th anniversary of Queen Victoria's first visit to Aberdeen when she was received by George Thomson junior, Esq, The Lord Provost and afterwards MP for Aberdeen. Erected by Mr and Mrs George Thomson, Yost. Pitmedden 8th September 1898'.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS), 20 March 1997.
