Archaeology Notes

NJ81NW 83 807 178

(Location cited as NJ 807 178). Beechfield. Air photography (AAS/99/03/CT2, flown 1 February 1999) has recorded an area of rig-and-furrow cultivation surviving in good condition as earthworks in rough grazing land on a SW-facing slope at an altitude of 99m OD.

NMRS, MS/712/90.

The following site was recorded during winter aerial reconnaissance. Full details are held in the Aberdeenshire SMR.

NJ 807 178 Rig and furrow.

Sponsors: RCAHMS, Aberdeenshire Council.

M Greig 1999.

A patchwork of plots of rig is visible in rough pasture about 200m SE of Beechfield. Of various alignments and breadths, the area of the rig is truncated on the ESE by a large conifer plantation, and on the WNW by improved fields; on the NNE and SSW the rigs peter out in former moorland.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS), 17 April 2002.
