Archaeology Notes

NJ72SW 87 7120 2254

Nothing is now visible of the old steading of Whitecross that is depicted on Walker and Beattie's estate plan of 1838 about 300m SE of the present steading of the same name (NJ72SW 89). The estate plan states that Whitecross comprised three buildings and almost 130 acres (52.6ha) of mixed arable ground, and pasture and was let by Alexander Nicol.

This is probably the same Alexander Nicol who is commemorated in Chapel of Garioch kirkyard (NJ72SW 6). A gravestone erected in the memory of William Nicol, farmer, Whitecross, is also dedicated to the memory of his father Alexander Nicol, farmer, Whitecross, who died in April 1849 aged 87 years and his wife Jane Noble who died 3rd October 1823 aged 46 years.

The old steading was demolished before 1869, when the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Aberdeenshire, sheet liv, 1869) depicts Whitecross at its present location.
