Archaeology Notes

NJ70NW 1.01 c. 726 071.

A greenstone axe, 13 by 3 7/8ins, polished on each face at the cutting end, found at Barmekin of Echt (centred NJ 7260 0714) was purchased for the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS) from the collection of John Sturrock, Monikie, in 1889 (Accession no: AF 388).

There are two stone axes from the Barmekin of Echt. One is the greenstone axe (NMS: AF 388) that is in the Royal Museum of Scotland, the other is in Marischal Museum, Aberdeen (ABDUA: 16067).
