Archaeology Notes

NJ66SW 21.13 centred 61675 62955

The remains of what was one of the Womens Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) accommodation camps is situated in woodland on the W side of Muir of Rettie, S of Rowantree and E of Coullieneuk Cottage.

At least four huts in varying states of dereliction survive in a triangular area of woodland. One small Nissen retains an in situ toilet and some shelving. In addition several concrete hut bases were noted in dense undergrowth around the suvriving standing huts.

The accommodation camp is visible on vertical air photographs (106G/Scot/UK 108, frames 3056-3057, flown 23 May 1946), which show that at that date there were at least fourteen huts, mainly Nissen with one larger and two possible air-raid shelters.
