(NJ 6983 5091) Tumulus (NR)

OS 6" map, Banffshire, 2nd ed., (1928)

Cairn (NR)

OS 6" map, (1959)

This tumulus was excavated early in 1906, and was shown to contain three separate burials, each accompanied by a beaker.

The tumulus is nearly circular and measures 64 to 68ft in diameter, and 7ft in height. It is almost entirely composed of sand mixed with clay, no stones having been used in its construction except as adjuncts to two of the deposits.

(Full excavation report and descriptions supplied.)

The urns and other finds are in the possession of Mr Douglas Abercromby, Forglen House.

J G Callander 1906.

The beakers include one of type Ca and two of type Cb.

M E C Mitchell 1934.

A much-mutilated overgrown mound of earth measuring c. 25.0m in diameter, with a maximum height of 1.7m. A large, recent, hole has been dug into the top of the mound. From Callander's (1906) description this would appear to be a tumulus, and not a cairn. There are said to be some urns, etc., in Forglen House, but no further information was obtained, owing to the recent death of the owner, Sir George Abercromby. Surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 9 September 1964.

A tumulus as described. The beakers were donated to the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland [NMAS] by the late Sir G Abercromby about 4 years ago.

Visited by OS (NKB) 12 January 1968.
