Archaeology Notes

NJ61NW 76 6352 1880

For Castle Forbes (NJ 62148 19130) and associated buildings, see NJ61NW 11.00.

The steading of this croft was abandoned before 1828, at which time its site is marked 'Cairns' on a plan of Castle Forbes estate (Walker and Beattie 1828). Neither is the steading depicted on either the 1st or 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Aberdeenshire, 1870, sheet liii and 1901, sheet liii.SW).

The steading, comprises four buildings, their grass-grown walls reduced to a height of no more than to 0.6m. The southernmost building measures 10m from E to W by 5.2m transversely overall, and appears to be overlain by the S side of the adjacent building to the N. This second building measures 6.2m from E to W by 4.3m transversely overall, and has an entrance midway along the N side. The third building, which lies immediately to the N, measures 5.2m from NNW to SSE by 3.9m overall and has an entrance on the WSW. The fourth building, the northernmost, in the group measures, 17.1m from NNW to SSE by 4.2m overall and contains three compartments.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS, RJCM), 4 October 1996.

NMRS, D15001.
