Mains of Shiels, 1742 (skewputs). Notably complete small mansion-house of mid-18th century, the residence of Charles MacKay of Shiels (d.1794) who commanded a merchant ship in the West India trade from the Port of London (stone in St Nidan's kirkyard). Muscular, simple and very pleasing T-plan main house with two-storey, ashlar granite front. Openings chamfered; bellcast roof with skewputs and ogee-coped chimneys; first-floor rooms panelled. Single-storey outbuilding
probably earlier - large hearth with ingle seats. Large walled garden.
