(NJ 5762 4031) Fairy Hillock (NAT) Tumulus (NR)

OS 6" map, Aberdeenshire, 2nd ed., (1928)

There is a tumulus at the north-east end of the ridge of which 'Robin Height' forms the western end. When opened, 'a number of great stones placed in a circular form, were found within... The stones were used for fencing the plantation which now covers this ridge, and all trace of the tumulus seems to be removed.'

New Statistical Account (NSA) 1845.

The Fairy Hillock was, traditionally a place of execution in feudal times.

Name Book 1871.

Situated on the summit of Newtongarry Hill is a turf-covered mound measuring 9.0m east-west and 6.0m north-south its maximum height is 1.0m. About 5.0m east of the mound there is a scarp, 2.0m wide and 0.4m high, which may have formed part of it.

The area in which the mound lies has been afforested but most of the trees have been cut down, there is no trace of a plantation bank. It is possible that the mound is the remains of a long cairn.

Surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (EGC) 2 October 1961.

Scheduled (with NJ54SE 16) as Gerrieswells, long barrow and round cairn.

Information from Historic Scotland, scheduling document dated December 1990.
