Archaeology Notes

NJ46SW 11 c.405 646.

A short cist, full of white sand, with a few flint implements and a small quantity of bluish mould, was found in April 1884, in a sandy knoll at the mouth of the Gollachy burn on Mains of Gollachy farm. The knoll, which commanded a fine view to the N shore of the Moray Firth, was not far from where other cists have been found (cf. NJ46SW 13, NJ46SW 14, NJ46SW 27 -31).

Aberdeen Journal 1884; T D Wallace 1888; G Thomson 1896; I C Walker 1969.

At NJ 4059 6460, about 30m N of the ruined Old Mill of Gollachy and c.200m from the mouth of the Burn of Gollachy is a prominent knoll, possibly the one referred to above.

Visited by OS 15 March 1962.
